Le Petit Deli

Our first choice for the best brunch in Amsterdam is Le Petit Deli, a charming Parisian-inspired restaurant. Le Petit Deli is a super cute corner café that is small in size but huge in flavor! Not only is the restaurant itself very picturesque, but the food is also beautiful and incredibly tasty. Le Petit Deli serves up a variety of classic coffee drinks and pastries, as well as some breakfast sandwiches and plates. Whether you want something quick to take on-the-go or a proper sit-down meal, Le Petit Deli has a little something for everyone to enjoy. Le Petit Deli is also conveniently located near the center of town, making it a great option for tourists who plan to do some sightseeing afterwards.

Hours: Le Petit Deli is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday and Monday (closed Tuesday).

Best Menu Items: For something sweet, you really can’t go wrong with any of the baked goods at Le Petit Deli. One of our favorite savory menu options is the chicken melt, which is a bit messy to eat, but absolutely bursting with flavor.

Tips: There is very limited seating at Le Petit Deli so plan to take your food to go, or wait a bit for some seats to open.

Bakers & Roasters

Bakers & Roasters is the next restaurant we consider one of the best breakfast places in Amsterdam. One of the really cool things about Bakers & Roasters is their food is heavily inspired by the cuisines of New Zealand and Brazil, where the two founders of the restaurant are originally from! Bakers & Roasters has an extensive menu with everything from familiar favorites like pancakes and French toast to unique creations such as eggs with barbecued pork and a pumpkin breakfast burrito. If you’re interested in branching out from a standard breakfast menu, Bakers & Roasters is the place to beat!

Location: Bakers & Roasters Kadijksplein and Bakers & Roasters De Pijp

Hours: Both locations are open from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Best Menu Items: One of the most popular options on the menu is the Kiwi Brekkie, a super filling New Zealand style breakfast platter with eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and more! 

Tips: Bakers & Roasters is an incredibly popular brunch spot in Amsterdam, so be prepared to wait. If you don’t have a reservation, it’s very important to scan the QR code upon arrival to the restaurant so you can secure your place in the virtual queue. This allows you to see how many people are ahead of you in line, and to receive a text message when your table is ready!

Coffee & Coconuts

For a delicious breakfast option that also doubles as one of the most Instagrammable cafes in Amsterdam, you must check out Coffee & Coconuts. Coffee & Coconuts is a beach-inspired spot known for its delicious coffee, homemade juices, and fresh foods. Of course, Coffee & Coconuts serves up some delicious drinks containing coconut water which are a super refreshing option to start the day!

Meanwhile, all of their food dishes are packed full of fruits, vegetables, and locally-sourced ingredients, like house made granola and whole grain bread. Overall, Coffee & Coconuts has a really fun and relaxed vibe that makes it a great place to grab some coffee and food before a full day of adventuring around Amsterdam.

Hours: This Amsterdam brunch spot is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Best Menu Items: The scrambled eggs avo is a fun twist on a classic avocado toast, and their coconut pancakes are super filling and yummy. Make sure to pair your food with a coffee as well – it’s all roasted in-house!

Tips: Coffee & Coconuts can get busy, but the café is large enough that you usually won’t have any issues finding a seat.

Dignita

Brunch-lovers rejoice: Dignita is one of the most well-known breakfast places in Amsterdam because they actually serve brunch all day long! That means you can enjoy your favorite breakfast dishes for lunch, dinner, or whenever your heart desires. There are three Dignita locations throughout Amsterdam, giving you plenty of options depending on which part of the city you happen to be exploring. All of the locations have a very relaxed and cozy vibe which pairs perfectly with their delicious breakfast sandwiches and platters. Dignita also offers some yummy wine, beer, and cocktail options if you feel like treating yourself – it is vacation after all!

Location: Dignita Vondelpark, Dignita Hoftuin, and Dignita Westerpark

Hours: Dignita Vondelpark is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Dignita Hoftuin is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Dignita Westerpark is open from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday and Wednesday through Friday, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday (closed Tuesday).

Best Menu Items: Dignita offers a few delicious variations on eggs benedict, which they call a Benny Boy breakfast. Their breakfast sandwiches are also a favorite!

Tips: A reservation is definitely recommended as Dignita is a very popular Amsterdam brunch spot.

PLUK Restaurant Amsterdam

Another great option for some of the best brunch in Amsterdam is PLUK Restaurant. PLUK is a super aesthetic restaurant and store where you can do some home and kitchen shopping after enjoying a delicious meal. Brunch options at PLUK range from pastries and smoothies to pancakes and savory bowls. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, which is great for visitors with certain dietary restrictions. Everything at PLUK from the décor to the food itself is picture-perfect, making it a great spot to grab some photos as well. You really can’t go wrong with a visit to PLUK!

Best Menu Items: All of their smoothie bowls are delicious and served with beautiful presentation. For something a bit heartier, try one of their sandwiches!

Tips: PLUK has somewhat limited seating, so takeaway might be a good option if the restaurant is especially popular when you visit.

Ree 7 

This next breakfast place, Ree 7, is known not only for its unique sweet creations, but also for being one of the most Instagrammable cafes in Amsterdam. Ree 7 is actually affiliated with PLUK, and you might notice it serves up some of the same menu items as its sister restaurant. Where Ree 7 really stands out, however, is its baked goods and dessert offerings, including their famous over-the-top milkshakes known as “freakshakes”. These indulgent drinks are loaded up with toppings like cotton candy and whole donuts! If you have a big sweet tooth, Ree 7 is the spot for you.

Hours: Ree 7 is open every day of the week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Best Menu Items: The freakshakes are hands-down the best and most popular menu item at Ree 7. They are very large though, so come hungry or find a buddy to share one with!

Tips: There are somewhat limited savory options at Ree 7, so it’s best to visit if you’re craving a sweet treat.

Staring at Jacob

Staring at Jacob is one of the best breakfast places in Amsterdam for those craving a hearty and savory breakfast. Staring at Jacob is actually a New York style restaurant, so Americans will probably recognize many of the dishes on their menu. One of the dishes Staring at Jacob is best known for is their chicken and waffles, though they also offer some lighter vegetarian options, such as a yogurt bowl and tofu scramble, as well. Staring at Jacob also offers some delicious breakfast cocktails, like mimosas and bloody Mary’s, that pair perfectly with their food options.

Tips: Staring at Jacob has a simple and sleek interior that makes it an especially great option for sit-down meal.

Sango

The next brunch place in Amsterdam we recommend visiting is Sango, a coffee roastery that also serves yummy breakfast dishes. While coffee is the most popular offering at Sango, they do have some delicious sandwiches and breads on their menu that are perfect for breakfast or lunch. Sango is a small café housed in a beautiful historic building, and the shop has a very laidback and welcoming atmosphere. One of the main reasons we chose Sango as a top breakfast place in Amsterdam is actually because of its location.

Sango is conveniently located near Amsterdam Centraal, the city’s main train station, meaning you can easily make your way there after arriving in the city to grab some food and coffee. While there are lots of coffeeshops in Amsterdam, not all are created equal, and Sango stands out as one of the best.

Hours: Sango is open from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Sunday through Tuesday and Friday, and 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday (closed Wednesday and Thursday).

Best Menu Items: All of their sandwiches are known for being exceptionally delicious, and you have to sample some coffee as well.

Tips: In addition to serving food and drinks, Sango also sells coffeemakers and accessories for your home-brewing setup, and hosts workshops that teach you all about coffee and how to make it!  

The Avocado Show

If you’re as avocado-obsessed as we are, you have to pay a visit to The Avocado Show! The Avocado Show is a super fun Amsterdam breakfast spot with an entire menu centered around the beloved avocado fruit. Forget everything you know about plain old avocado – The Avocado Show takes things to the next level by offering everything from avocado fries to avocado pancakes, and, of course, avocado toast.

Obviously, The Avocado Show is geared toward those who love avocado, but there are plenty of other food options as well, such as eggs benedict and fruity pancakes. The Avocado Show is a really fun breakfast place that is sure to be a hit!  

Location: De Pijp, Keizersgracht, Kleine Gartman (to-go location), and Willemspark

Hours: The Avocado Show De Pijp is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Friday through Sunday. The Avocado Show Keizersgracht is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Friday and Saturday. The first Amsterdam Instagram spot we’re highlighting is Damrak Waterfront. Damrak Waterfront is a very well-known and popular area right in the heart of Amsterdam, at the city’s main train station. This spot is an excellent place to photograph some of Amsterdam’s iconic canal houses that were built along the Damrak canal. If the water in the canal is still enough when you visit, you might even be able to capture the reflection of the houses on the water for a super cool photo effect!

Best Time for Photos: The best time to visit Damrak Waterfront is early in the morning before crowds begin to gather and when the water is calm. The light and reflection is best at blue hour and just as the sun is rising!

Tips: The houses along Damrak canal are some of the oldest in the entire city! They are sometimes referred to as “Dancing Houses”. 

De Beurspassage

This next Instagram spot in Amsterdam can be found in the center of town, tucked between the streets of Damrak and Nieuwendijk. De Beurspassage is an enclosed passageway that connects the two streets and showcases some incredible tilework. Though the passageway is unassuming upon first glance, stepping inside will reveal a jaw-dropping display of artwork. The passageway was first built in the 19^th-century, but it wasn’t until 2016 that a group of Dutch artists was enlisted to reimagine the once-barren space. Today, visitors flock to the 165’ passageway to admire its vaulted ceilings and beautiful tiles.

Hours: De Beurspassage is open to visitors 24 hours a day.

Best Time for Photos: Since this photo spot is centrally located between two major shopping areas, we recommend visiting early in the morning before it gets too busy.

Tips: To properly capture the tall ceilings of De Beurspassage, use a wide-angle lens and don’t be afraid to get low to the ground to shoot upwards!

Papiermolensluis

One of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam that offers amazing views of the city is Papiermolensluis. Papiermolensluis is a stone bridge over one of the city’s numerous canals. From the bridge, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of some of Amsterdam’s most historic and picturesque buildings. Papiermolensluis is one of the city’s most popular Instagram spots because of the beautiful setting and the wide variety of photo opportunities it offers.

Tips: Try shooting photographs of the bridge itself, as well as standing on the bridge looking out onto the canal and buildings beyond.

Bloemgracht

Unsurprisingly, some of the best Instagram spots in Amsterdam can be found along the city’s iconic canals, and Bloemgracht is one of our favorites. Bloemgracht can be found in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, one of the city’s most famous neighborhoods. The Bloemgracht canal was built in the 17^th-century during an era known as the Third Expansion of Amsterdam. Today, the canal is an incredibly picturesque hidden gem of Amsterdam. You’ll be able to capture charming photos of boats in the canal as well as the historic homes that line the waterway.

Best Time for Photos: You can visit Bloemgracht any time, but earlier in the day is usually ideal.

Tips: You can walk along Bloemgracht and photograph the canal from several places to get a great variety of photos. Exploring this area of Jordaan with no specific destination in mind is a great way to get a feel for this beautiful city.

The next Amsterdam Instagram spot we’ll be highlighting is a view of Westerkerk, a beautiful church built in the 1600s. Westerkerk is known for its Renaissance-style architecture and large bell tower that can be spotted from quite some distance away. Bloemstraat is a narrow street that offers some of the best views of Westerkerk for taking photos. Visiting this street will give you lots of flexibility for shooting the church from a variety of angles and locations.

Dam Square is home to some of the city’s top attractions, such as the National Monument and the Royal Palace. Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is situated on Dam Square, and a round window in the museum offers incredible views of the square below – perfect for taking photos!

Cost: The price to visit Madame Tussauds ranges from €22 to €36.50 ($21 USD to $35 USD) per person.

W Amsterdam Rooftop

One of the best ways to gain a new perspective on a city is by seeing it from above! The rooftop of the W Amsterdam is one of the best Amsterdam Instagram spots where you can get an overhead view of the city. The W Amsterdam hotel is just a short walk from the Royal Palace, placing it in a great location in Amsterdam’s city center. The rooftop of the hotel is home to W Lounge, a swanky cocktail bar with delicious concoctions and stunning views.

Hours: The W Lounge is open from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM Sunday through Thursday, and 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM on Friday and Saturday.

Best Time for Photos: Sunset is an incredible time of day to visit the W Amsterdam rooftop. Arrive around 30 minutes to 1 hour before sunset so that you have time to have a seat, get your drinks, and photograph the amazing sunset.

Tips: If you visit around sunset, make sure to photograph the sun setting behind Westerkerk!

Staalmeestersbrug

Another historic bridge that doubles as one of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam is Staalmeestersbrug. This is one of the most unique bridges in the entire city, because it’s actually a wooden drawbridge. The bridge was built in 1920 and has since become known as Love Lock Bridge thanks to the tradition of couples placing a padlock on the bridge as a symbol of their eternal love for each other. This romantic spot, which can be found near the University of Amsterdam, also offers beautiful views of Amsterdam that make it an excellent photo spot.

Tips: Make sure to bring a padlock if you’re traveling with a romantic partner!

Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum is one of top Instagram spots in Amsterdam and also one of the most popular attractions in the entire city. Rijksmuseum is actually the national museum of the Netherlands and contains a variety of works dedicated to Dutch art and history. The museum was first established in the late 1700s and has grown to become the largest art museum in the country. Millions of people from all over the world visit Rijksmuseum every year, and it’s definitely a must-visit destination during your time in Amsterdam.

Hours: Rijksmuseum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Cost: Admission to Rijksmuseum is €20 ($19 USD) for adults and free for visitors 18 and under.

Best Time for Photos: Try to visit Rijksmuseum right after opening before the museum gets too crowded. It becomes especially popular on weekends.

Tips: Rijksmuseum is huge, so make sure you dedicate a good chunk of time to exploring all that the museum has to offer. 

Moco Museum

Another beautiful museum that we consider a top Amsterdam Instagram spot is Moco Museum, located in the heart of the city. Moco Museum is an art museum that mostly features modern and contemporary works. The museum was established to appeal to younger audiences than those who traditionally visit art museums, with the hope of making art more accessible to the general public. The museum is relatively small compared to others in the city, but features an amazing variety of artwork. The museum also features a sculpture garden on the grounds which offers some especially great Instagram photo spots.

Location: Moco Museum

Hours: Moco Museum is open 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday, and from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Friday through Sunday.

Cost: Tickets to Moco Museum are €15.95 ($15 USD) for adults and €12.95 ($12 USD) for kids 7-17 years old and students (children under 7 are free).

Best Times for Photos: Try to plan your visit during an off-peak time, such as shortly before closing.

Tips: The grounds of the museum, which contain the sculpture garden, are actually free to visit! You can enter the grounds of the museum on the opposite of the main ticket entrance to the Moco Museum.

Van Wonderen Stroopwafels

For one of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam AND one of the most delicious, you have to visit Van Wonderen Stroopwafels. The bakery is famous for serving up stroopwafels, a classic Dutch dessert that consists of a caramel filling between two thin waffle cookies. These aren’t your average stroopwafels, though, as Van Wonderen offers all kinds of fun twists on the original treat, such as stroopwafels dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with candy toppings! As a bonus, the shop itself is also super cute, making it the perfect location to grab a snack and snap some photos.

Hours: Van Wonderen Stroopwafels is open every day of the week from 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM.

Best Time for Photos: You can score some awesome photos at Van Wonderen Stroopwafels any time of day.

Tips: After grabbing your stroopwafel, make your way outside to a canal to snap some super cute photos of your yummy treat with a canal in the background. It doesn’t get much more Amsterdam than this!

Bloemenmarkt 

One of the most unique Instagram spots in Amsterdam is Bloemenmarkt, a flower shop that floats on the Singel canal. Bloemenmarkt is one of the city’s most popular attractions because it’s actually the world’s only floating flower market. Bloemenmarkt was originally founded in 1862, and has a long and rich history closely tied to the city of Amsterdam. In addition to flowers, the market also sells different Dutch souvenirs and goods. At the market you can find all kinds of beautiful flowers such as violets, peonies, and tulips, of course!

Hours: You can visit Bloemenmarkt from 9:00 AM to 5:30PM Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Sunday.

Best Time for Photos: The best time to take photos at Bloemenmarkt is in the morning when there are plenty of fresh flowers.

Tips: Though there are plenty of spots to photograph in Bloemenmarkt, the best flower stall for photos is the one furthest to the east, near Hotel NH.

Vondelchurch is a top Amsterdam Instagram spot that gives off major Harry Potter vibes! The Gothic church was in operation from 1880 to 1977 and today houses a number of offices for local businesses. Vondelchurch has a striking appearance, with dramatic spires that are reminiscent of Hogwarts. The church is a beautiful piece of architecture that is one of the most beloved in the entire city, and also makes for a striking and dramatic addition to your Amsterdam photos.

Zevenlandenhuizen

The neighborhood of Zevenlandenhuizen is undoubtedly one of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam thanks to its beautiful architecture. Zevenlandenhuizen translates to “Houses of Seven Countries” which references the seven houses found in this area. The houses were built in 1894 and each represent a unique architectural style from a different country. This area is really unique and fun to explore, and our favorite section to take photographs is the orange and white striped house. Zevenlandenhuizen is a true hidden gem of Amsterdam that you’ll be happy you took the time to visit!

Best Time for Photos: You can visit Zevenlandenhuizen any time of day and score some awesome photos. 

Tips: Zevenlandenhuizen isn’t as popular as some of the other locations on this list, so you won’t have to worry about battling large crowds for photos.

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam

One of the most beautiful Instagram spots in Amsterdam is Hortus Botanicus, a large botanical garden. Hortus Botanicus was first founded in 1638, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. There are countless plants to explore at Hortus Botanicus in both the indoor and outdoor areas, and the garden is also home to a butterfly house. The whole property is incredibly beautiful with tons of great photo spots to discover around every corner. One of the most picturesque features of Hortus Botanicus that we recommend taking photos of is the large glass conservatory.

Hours: You can visit Hortus Botanicus every day of the week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the summer, the garden is open until 9:00 PM on Thursday and Sunday.

Skinny Bridge

Skinny Bridge is a famous landmark of Amsterdam that we consider one of the best Instagram spots in Amsterdam. The first bridge to be built at this location was constructed in 1691 and became known by locals as Magere Brug, meaning “skinny bridge”, given how narrow it was. By 1871, the bridge had deteriorated so much it was demolished and replaced by a new bridge that was also replaced in 1934. The 1934 bridge is the one that still stands to this day. One unique feature of Skinny Bridge is the fact that its center portion is actually moveable, giving water vessels the opportunity to pass underneath via the canal.

Tips: At night, the bridge is illuminated for pedestrians and cyclists, giving it a magical quality!

Amsterdam Bike Photo

You can’t pay a visit to the bike capital of the world without taking a photo of yourself with a bicycle! There are tons of bikes all throughout Amsterdam, giving you tons of opportunities to score an awesome Amsterdam bike photo. Many of these bikes are actually permanently parked and decorated so visitors can take photos with them! You’ll probably stumble across some super cool bicycles by just walking around the various neighborhoods of Amsterdam.  

Location: For classic bike and canal vibes, try exploring the Jordaan and 9 Streets neighborhoods.

Though the outside is somewhat unassuming, stepping inside MaMa Kelly will transport you to a whole other world – a very pink world! The entire restaurant is decked out with pink décor and finishings, making this restaurant a photographer’s dream. Amsterdam, and the Netherlands in general, is well-known for its large flower fields and tulips in particular. April is the best month to plan your visit if you want to see these beautiful flowers in bloom. While most of the tulip fields and farms are located outside of Amsterdam, many are just a short trip away and well worth a visit.

Is it safe to walk at night in Amsterdam?

Overall, Amsterdam is a relatively safe European city, so as long as you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, you shouldn’t have any issues. The main tourist areas of Amsterdam stay relatively crowded almost all hours of the day, and the Red-Light District is quite safe as well, especially if you’re traveling in a group. How to Get from Amsterdam Airport to City Center

Amsterdam has a fantastic infrastructure for traveling between the airport and city center, meaning you can easily and quickly get into and out of the city. This makes Amsterdam a great city to explore if, for instance, you need to kill some time on a long layover! One of the most popular ways to get to the city center from Amsterdam Airport is via train. There are nearly non-stop trains that run between the airport and Amsterdam Centraal, and they are all reasonably-priced (9.50 EUR one way or 17.25 EUR return ($10.25 USD or $18.50 USD) and easy to use.

Another great option is the metro, especially if you’re staying somewhere a bit farther from Amsterdam Centraal.

How to Get Around Amsterdam

Although Amsterdam is considered the bike capital of the world, traveling on foot is the easiest way to explore the city. Renting a bike can be fun for days where you have less activities planned and more flexibility, but on big sightseeing days, we recommend walking.

Day one of this 2 day itinerary in Amsterdam focuses on some of the most popular and well-known sights in the city. While there are some tourist attractions you could skip if you’re short on time, all the ones we discuss are must-visit spots and well-worth your time. It’s going to be a busy day, so make sure you wear some comfortable walking shoes!

Breakfast in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets)

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we’re kicking off this Amsterdam weekend itinerary with a morning visit to Negen Straatjes (which translates to Nine Streets). Negen Straatjes is a very hip and laidback neighborhood of Amsterdam that is home to a bunch of delicious breakfast and brunch cafes. Some of our top recommendations in this area include PLUK, Ree7 (both of which we featured on our guide to the Best Breakfast and Brunch Places in Amsterdam), and Koffiehuis ‘De Hoek’. 

Location: Negen Straatjes

Hours: Cafes in Amsterdam typically open around 9:00 AM, though this may vary depending on the specific restaurant.

Helpful Tips: Typical breakfast dishes in Amsterdam include eggs benedict, toast with jam, and pancakes or waffles! Whether you prefer sweet or savory, you’re sure to find something delicious!

Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House

The first landmark we recommend visiting during your weekend in Amsterdam is Westerkerk, followed by the nearby Anne Frank House. Westerkerk is a stunning Renaissance-style church that was originally built in the 1600s. The building features dramatic architecture and an almost 300-foot (91 m) bell tower that is the highest church tower in the entire city. We actually featured Westerkerk on our list of the Top 20 Amsterdam Instagram Spots because of how beautiful it is!

After snapping some pictures of the church, make your way across the street to the Anne Frank House. This historic building is where Anne Frank famously hid with her family during Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in the 1940s. Today, the house is a very moving museum dedicated to her story.

Location: Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House 

Hours: Westerkerk now houses administrative offices, so you can only photograph the exterior. The Anne Frank House is open daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Cost: Tickets for the Anne Frank House are €14 ($13 USD) for adults, €7 ($6.50 USD) for youth 10-17 years old, and €1 ($1 USD) for children 9 and under.

Helpful Tips: We recommend purchasing your tickets to the Anne Frank House in advance because it’s a very popular museum, and consider an Anne Frank Walking Tour.

Dam Square

An Amsterdam 2 day itinerary would truly be incomplete without a stop at Dam Square! Dam Square is the major town square in Amsterdam that is full of shops and restaurants. Dam Square can get quite crowded and is considered a pretty touristy area, but we still think it’s worth a visit. This area is especially great if you love to shop because there are a lot of awesome stores located all around the square. Regardless of whether you plan to shop or not, Dam Square is a very beautiful area of Amsterdam that everyone taking a trip to the city should visit at least once.

Helpful Tips: Dam Square is known for frequently hosting fun events and festivals, so keep your eyes peeled during your visit.

Bloemenmarkt

Bloemenmarkt is one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam because of how unique and famous it is. Bloemenmarkt is a flower market situated on a canal, making it the world’s first and only floating flower market! Bloemenmarkt primarily sells tulips, which the Netherlands is famous for, though there are other flowers available to purchase as well. At Bloemenmarkt, you can also watch tulips being prepared and sanitized for importation to Canada and the United States which is a really interesting process. Bloemenmarkt is a beautiful and one-of-a-kind spot that is great for wandering around and taking pictures.

Hours: You can visit Bloemenmarkt from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Sunday.

Amsterdam Museum Quarter

The Amsterdam Museum Quarter is, as the name suggests, full of amazing museums! Amsterdam is known for being home to some of the best museums in the world, and many can be found in this area. Popular museums in the Amsterdam Museum Quarter include Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. There are also a number of smaller museums in this area such as Moco Museum, which features modern and contemporary art. We recommend doing your own research on museums and picking your favorite to visit.

Hours: Hours will vary depending on the specific museum but typically range from 9:00 AM to 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Purchasing timed entry tickets such as for the Van Gogh Museum is highly recommended to save a lot of time.

Helpful Tips: There is a huge variety of museums in this area dedicated to different interests such as art, history, and more.

Dinner in Jordaan

Jordaan is one of our favorite neighborhoods in Amsterdam, so we knew we had to include it on this 2 day Amsterdam itinerary. Jordaan is considered a very residential part of the city, and is full of beautiful historic homes built along picture-perfect canals. There are also lots of cafes, restaurants, and shops to explore in Jordaan, though this neighborhood is generally pretty quiet compared to more popular areas of the city. While there are a lot of delicious dinner options in Jordaan, we personally recommend Café Sonneveld to try some traditional Dutch food.

Hours: Café Sonneveld is open daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Helpful Tips: Jordaan is a very picturesque neighborhood of Amsterdam, making it a great place to take some photos for your Instagram! At Café Sonneveld, be sure to try the typical Dutch specialty, stamppot.

Sunset at the W Hotel

Whenever we take a weekend trip, we always make a point of stopping to watch the sunset at least one evening. To catch beautiful sunset views in Amsterdam, we recommend swinging by the W Hotel. Amsterdam, and most of the Netherlands, is very flat, so there are limited places to get good views from above. The W Hotel is home to a great rooftop bar where you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the city. The time of sunset will vary depending on what time of year you visit, so you may be able to catch some views before dinner, or even grab dinner at the W as you watch the setting sun!

Hours: The W Lounge is open from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM Sunday through Thursday, and 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM on Friday and Saturday.

Helpful Tips: From the rooftop of the W Hotel you’ll be able to spot some of the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Westerkerk!

Optional: See the Red-Light District

The last activity we recommend to close out day one of this 2 day itinerary in Amsterdam is the Red-Light District, though we’ve made it optional because it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. There are technically multiple Red-Light Districts throughout the city, though the most well-known is De Wallen. The Red-Light District is actually the oldest neighborhood in all of Amsterdam, and is full of historic buildings and canals that sport classic Dutch architecture.

The Red-Light District is also home to some unique establishments, such as sex shops, strip clubs, and museums that focus on interests such as marijuana and sex. While it may sound a bit intimidating, the Red-Light District is an incredibly safe area of Amsterdam and a very unique fixture of the city we recommend taking the time to experience.

Hours: You can explore this area any time of day, though the signature red lights aren’t lit up until nighttime.

Helpful Tips: One unique aspect of the Red-Light District is that strip clubs and brothels will often have window displays featuring live models to encourage visitors. While you can photograph the buildings themselves, it is considered disrespectful to take pictures of the window models themselves.

The Ultimate Amsterdam 2 Day Itinerary: Day Two

Day two of our Amsterdam weekend itinerary will focus more on laidback activities rather than sightseeing and touring museums. This is one day you may want to consider renting a bike to explore the city, as you will have more flexibility than day one and can take more time to bike and wander around without feeling rushed.

Optional: Sunrise at Damrak

Early risers are sure to enjoy a visit to Damrak to watch the sunrise and kick off the second day of this Amsterdam 2 day itinerary. Damrak is a popular avenue and canal that is considered one of Amsterdam’s main streets, as it connects to Amsterdam Centraal. During later hours of the day, Damrak gets very busy and chaotic, so a visit early in the morning is a great way to experience the street when things are still quiet. One of the most unique aspects of visiting Damrak for sunrise is the beautiful reflections that can be spotted on the water of the canal, as the surface will be still and quiet. If you stayed out too late on day one or just prefer to sleep in, feel free to skip this stop!

Helpful Tips: There are many cafes along Damrak where you can grab a morning cup of joe to keep you warm on your walk.

See Papiermolensluis

Papiermolensluis (try saying that five times fast!) is a picturesque bridge that is considered one of the best photo spots in all of Amsterdam. The bridge, which is made of stone, crosses over a canal and is often visited by tourists and photographers who want to snap some photos of its beauty. On either side of the bridge are classic Dutch canal houses that add a ton of charm and character to the area. There are lots of photo opportunities at Papiermolensluis, and we definitely recommend a morning visit.

Helpful Tips: Plan your visit to Papiermolensluis for the morning so you can avoid large afternoon crowds of tourists. Take in the city as it begins to wake up!

Breakfast or Brunch in Jordaan

For breakfast (or brunch, depending on when you decide to eat) on day two, we suggest returning to the Jordaan neighborhood. There are many delicious cafes and restaurants throughout this area, though our personal favorite for breakfast is Le Petit Deli. As the name suggests, Le Petit Deli is a smaller corner café that serves breakfast sandwiches, platters, and classic coffee and tea drinks. Seating in Le Petit Deli is very limited, so be prepared to wait for a table or plan to take your meal to go. The shop itself is super cute and the food is very tasty, making Le Petit Deli the perfect spot to start your day off on the right foot!

Hours: Le Petit Deli is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday and Monday (closed Tuesday).

Helpful Tips: We recommend their delicious chicken melt sandwich, though you can’t go wrong with any of their baked goods either!

Amsterdam Canal Cruise

With over 150 canals, one of the best ways to experience the city of Amsterdam is by boat! Taking a canal cruise is an excellent way to see Amsterdam from the water and gain a new perspective on the city and its history. A canal cruise is also a great activity for day two of this 2-day itinerary in Amsterdam because it gives you the opportunity to sit back and relax while still exploring the city at the same time. There are many companies that offer different variations of canal cruises, so do some research to find one that best fits your budget and needs.

Hours: Some companies offer 1-hour tours available various hours throughout the day, while others offer day-long tours where you can hop on and off as you like. 

Cost: The price for an Amsterdam canal cruise will vary depending on which company you book through, but typically range from €15 to €30 ($14 to $28 USD) per person.

Helpful Tips: Some companies offer special packages like canal cruises that serve wine and beer, or romantic cruises for couples!

Bike Amsterdam

Since Amsterdam is considered the bike capital of the world, we also have to include some time for biking on this Amsterdam 2 day itinerary. Amsterdam’s infrastructure is very accommodating for pedestrians and bicyclists, and renting a bike is a fantastic way to see more of the city than you might be able to on foot. We recommend venturing away from Amsterdam’s city center to explore some of the surrounding neighborhoods. There are many shops and companies throughout the city where you can rent bikes for different lengths of time, so you shouldn’t have any issues finding a rental location.

Location: A-Bike Rental and Rent a Bike are some of the most popular options in the city. 

Hours: Most bike rental companies are open every day of the week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Cost: The price to rent a bike typically ranges from €10 to €20 ($9 to $18 USD) per person.

Helpful Tips: Most of the roads in Amsterdam have specifically-marked bike lanes, though you may need to walk your bike through certain pedestrian areas. Be sure to stay well aware of your surroundings as the city is filled with hundreds of other cyclists, confused tourists, buses, trams, cars, and more.

Optional: Heineken Experience

While this next activity is optional, we definitely recommend a visit if you have any interest in the Heineken company or beer in general.  The Heineken Experience takes place in Heineken’s first and oldest brewery which opened in 1864. The experience takes you through the historic brewery to educate visitors on the history of the Heineken company and the beer itself. You’ll tour the building, learn about the brewing process, and even have the opportunity to enjoy a couple Heineken beers at the end of the tour!

Location: Heineken Experience

Hours: Tours are available from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM Friday and Saturday.

Cost: Standard tickets to the Heineken Experience are €21 ($20 USD) per person.

Helpful Tips: You must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Heineken Experience.

Dinner in De Pijp

To close out this Amsterdam weekend itinerary, we suggest grabbing dinner in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighborhood. De Pijp is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the entire city, and for good reason. The whole area is full of delicious restaurants and fun bars where you can eat and drink to your heart’s content. You really can’t go wrong with grabbing a drink and a bite to eat in De Pijp, so don’t worry about doing too much research before visiting. Part of the fun is exploring and randomly popping into different places! De Pijp is a very lively neighborhood of Amsterdam that is loved by both locals and tourists alike.

Helpful Tips: Middle Eastern food is a particularly popular dinner option in De Pijp, though there are all different kinds of restaurants for you to choose from.

For great weather and fewer crowds, we recommend planning your trip to Amsterdam during March through May or in September. Spring can be popular because the tulips will be blooming, but the crowds are worth the experience of seeing Amsterdam’s gorgeous flower fields in person!

Winter in Amsterdam

Winter in Amsterdam is known for its cold and dreary weather that makes outdoor activities less than ideal. Temperatures will typically fluctuate from 35 to 50 F (2 to 10 C), so you’ll need to pack plenty of layers. If you plan to primarily explore indoor spots, such as cafes and museums, winter is a great time to visit as hotels are significantly cheaper this time of year.

Spring in Amsterdam

Spring is undoubtedly one of the best and most beautiful times of year to visit Amsterdam. With tulips in full bloom by mid-April, tourists flock to Amsterdam this time of year to visit the massive flower fields located just outside the city. The weather in spring is typically mild, ranging from 50 to 60 F (10 to 15 C), and sunny, which is quite pleasant for sightseeing.

Summer in Amsterdam

Summer is the best time of year to visit if you plan to do a lot of outdoor activities, though it is the most busy and expensive season. Summer weather in Amsterdam is especially beautiful, with temperatures hovering between 65 to 80 F (18 to 27C ). Activities such as bike-riding and canal cruises are especially popular this time of year.

Fall in Amsterdam

Early fall is another great option for visiting Amsterdam if you prefer slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds. Temperatures during fall stay around 50 to 60 F (10 to 15 C), so you can still enjoy outdoor activities without being too cold. For casual accommodations in a convenient location, Leonardo Hotel is a great option, with rooms available for around 140 EUR ($150 USD) per night. Another good option is Corendon City Hotel, a beautiful property with budget-friendly rooms priced around 118 EUR ($127 USD) per night.

If you have a little more flexibility in your budget, consider staying at Eden Hotel. Eden Hotel is centrally-located, making it a great home base for your weekend trip, and is situated along a picturesque canal, with rooms available for 232 EUR ($250 USD) a night.
