Favourite Christmas Activities in Chicago with Chicwish

Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. Living in a city like Chicago, there are so many great ways to experience the holidays if you need a little help getting into the Christmas spirit, or if you just want to take it all in!

I feel like no trip downtown into the Loop is complete without a quick visit to the Bean. It’s my favourite Chicago landmark, and no matter the weather or time of day is always so photogenic.

One of my newest favourite pastimes (you might already know if you follow me on Instagram) is lobby hunting! There are so many great hotels and office towers in Chicago and it seems that each year they try to out-do each other in Christmas decorations!

My favourite office building decoration was by far the tree at 77 W Wacker Drive and you easily see why! (Hint: their ornaments are my favourite colour!)

As far as hotel lobbies go, the lobby at the Conrad Chicago Hotel surpassed all my expectations. Located on the 20th floor, it is secluded from the shopping fever on Michigan Avenue and made me feel more relaxed the moment I stepped off the elevator. The lobby is flooded with natural light. Once you make your way to the floor to ceiling windows to catch a glimpse of the fantastic city view, you can't help but admire the colourfully decorated staircase and Christmas tree.

Finally, a Christmas tour of the Loop would not be complete without stops at the the Macy’s Christmas windows and the Christkindlmarket. Both attractions are so popular that I suggest going as early in the morning as possible to avoid the crowds if you're visiting on a weekend, or try to stop by on a week day.

Every year, I treat myself to a gluhwein, which tastes just like at home in Switzerland, but this time I couldn’t help myself and caved for some hot chocolate.

One thing to keep in mind when exploring the city in December - it can be really cold and windy. Big thanks to Chicwish for keeping me warm as I explored Chicago’s Christmas wonders this year. Their cozy sweaters are the perfect combination of fashionable, cute, and warm! I have been wearing them non-stop since they arrived in the mail. I also love the elegance of the Cape Coat which will easily make any winter outfit look more put together. If you're curious to see how the sweaters and the coat fit, you can check out my try-on Instagram stories which include sizing information.

These are just a few of my favourite holiday traditions in Chicago, and we didn’t even get a chance to ice skate over to Millenium Park, admire the Zoo Lights, or take a ride on the holiday train! What is your favourite way to celebrate the holidays in Chicago?

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

In two short months, Kyle and I have officially been blogging for a year and I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. We have met some incredible people along the way and have been to amazing places. But most importantly, we were able to share this journey with you! We wouldn't be here without you and we hope to be able to inspire you to take that next trip you were planning for so long, explore new cultures, and take fashion around the globe! Your support means the world to us which is why I want to share some of my favorite bloggers with you and the reason why we met: Style Collective.

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

What is Style Collective?

Style Collective is a community of bloggers and #bossbabes, founded by Annie Spano. Annie’s goal was to create a community for go-getters in the blogging industry who support one another, teach each other the ins and outs of the industry, and eventually even become friends.  I joined Style Collective a few months ago looking for exactly that: a community of #bossbabes who I could connect with and who all have the blogging industry in common. Little did I know that I would find so much more than that: Style Collective helped me take our blog to the next level and I have been able to connect with some amazing women.

How Style Collective Helped Me Take Our Blog to the Next Level

After signing up for their membership program, I dove into their online resources and learned an incredible amount about the blogging industry. From how to find and communicate my mission, pitch to brands, calculate the value of blog and Instagram posts (yes, I was surprised to hear how much Instagram posts can be worth), and how to successfully work with brands (check out our collaborations with JORD and SomSleep), you can learn everything with their e-books.

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

One of my favorite tools available online, is their brand directory which includes contact information of companies who are looking to work with bloggers. Having this information compiled in one place helps facilitate collaborations and partnerships, and build valuable business relations.

Meeting Annie Spano - The Founder of Style Collective

But Style Collective is more than just an online resource. Annie goes out of her way to connect with #scsisters and build a sense of community. She makes time to respond to individual inquiries, to meet with Style Collective members (yes, I met her in person and she is even sweeter than she is on social media), and has helped me host my first Style Collective get-together.

The Style Collective Community

Annie is not just an inspiration from a business persective, she is also the reason why I have met some incredible bloggers all across the country. Not only are they successful bloggers, they also all have full-time jobs, family, and support people who are just starting out. How they manage to fit their busy lives into 24-hour days is beyond me.

Let me introduce you to 7 of my favorite #SCmembers who support me every day. I hope they inspire you just as much as they inspire me.

  • Renata from Urban Girl Goes Beach Mom is a fashion, beauty, and mom blogger and has two adorable kids. She inspires other moms (and non-moms like me) to be in style. I love her casual chic style and her 5 minute makeup looks she creates every Monday morning on Instagram live. If you're only remotely as busy as she is, check out her quick and easy makeup tutorials! You can read her blog here and follow her on Instagram here.

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

I truly believe that everyone needs a great watch that they can use everywhere - from work, to a night out on the town, or on their next trip. I'm not just talking about any regular watch that displays time - that is what phones are for these days. What I'm talking about is the one accessory that makes you feel more put together, the accessory that starts a conversation, is as unique as you and will take you places!

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

Let me introduce you to this wooden watch which has won me over with its unique yet classic design. Coming from Switzerland, I have a special relation with watches and am very picky with watch designs (let's be honest, I'm picky about pretty much everything). I like large watches that make a statement but I also like classic designs. This Jord wood watch checks both boxes and with a bit of luck, you can win $100 towards your own watch at the end of this post!

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

I must admit, I had never heard of the concept of a wooden watch but I love it! The wood is extremely comfortable to wear and is not only perfect for people who love a unique accessory but also for people with sensitive skin. Unlike leather watches which can cause skin irritations (yes that's a thing and it runs in my family), plastic watches which wear out too fast, or metal watches which really pinch your hair, this wooden watch is amazingly comfortable to wear.

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

By far my favourite feature of the Dover watch is that it's a mechanical watch. Mechanical watches, or self-winding watches, use a spring instead of a battery to show the passing of time. Meaning, you don't have to change the battery - ever! Instead, you wind it up to run. It's such a cool aspect of the watch and I'm fascinated watching the springs work.

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

Mechanical watches are the oldest form of watches and originated in Europe in the 17th century. You really can't get more classic than wearing this mechanical wooden watch which will transport you right back in time like this one did for me when walking through the streets of Silverton, Colorado.

If you're not as much into watching the springs of the watch work, Jord has a wide variety of self-winding wooden watches with different and unique designs as well as watches that are battery operated. They range from modern men’s watches to dainty women’s watches, can all be engraved, and come in this gorgeous wooden box.

I would like to think that I fit right in while walking through town, passing by a horse and carriage, and exploring old mines – all while wearing my Jord watch.

White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge

Going to a white party has been on my bucket list for years. I have to admit that I got hooked on the idea of going to a party where everyone is dressed in white through one of my favourite TV shows. It is such an elegant concept for a summer event that you just can't resist the idea. When I received an invite to go to the White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge, I canceled all my other plans for Sunday, which consisted of my usual weekend to do list, aka laundry, and dragged Kyle shopping for an all-white outfit. After all, going to this party is a bucket list item and it was part of the fun to follow the theme closely.

White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge

We got to the Devereaux Rooftop at noon and were blown away by the sleek and modern design of the rooftop. The turquoise pool in the middle is surrounded by little white tables and white chairs - perfect for spending a sunny afternoon with friends, drinks, and some bites.

The Devereaux is located in the gold coast neighbourhood, a great location for some astonishing city and lake views. We found a cozy table and couldn't resist the idea of a cool and sweet Frosé, a cool summer drink made with - who would have guessed it - frozen rosé.

What could be better than spending the afternoon with friends, on a sunny rooftop with breathtaking views, and incredibly delicious drinks?

The White Party featured small bites by chef Lee Wolen which of course we couldn't pass up. Shortly after we started sipping on our drinks, waiters flew around with trays of heavenly goodness.

We were served some incredibly delicious fried chicken and pickle bites with sriracha aioli and ranch, tuna poke on a nori chip with avocado and sesame, and my personal favorite - roasted strawberry and burrata with basil on a brioche.

White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge

Light, fresh, and too good to resist! Needless to say, I grabbed a bite every time these trays came around.

Us girls couldn't resist a few snaps to show off our pretty white party outfits.

The Gal Meets Glam Collection Launch

Happy (not so casual) Friday! This is a very special blog post to me. Exactly one week ago, Gal Meets Glam launched their dress collection. I have been following Julia Engel (Gal Meets Glam) for a while now and I love everything she does. Her energy is inspiring, her style impeccable, and her business drive is mind-blowing. She has worked so hard to get from being a blogger to a clothing designer and now sells her line at Nordstrom. I'm a fan of her dresses, all of her work, but most of all, I'm a fan of her being an empowering example to women all over the world by showing what one can achieve with hard work.

As some of you know, I was in line at Nordstrom Michigan Avenue right when the store opened a week ago. The first 30 customers to buy one of her dresses would get a ticket to meet her on May 17 in Chicago (which also happens to be my birthday). Of course, I couldn't pass up the chance to be one of the first to see her collection in store and to get a chance to meet her.

It turns out, there were a few Gal Meets Glam fans at Nordstrom that morning. As soon as the doors opened, we all ran up to the third floor to be the first ones to see the collection. It was incredible! All the dresses were even prettier than they look online!

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

I immediately fell in love with the dress Evelyn and so it came home with me.

It's a beautiful spring occasion dress and would work perfectly for attending weddings, spring or summer evening parties, or any other events you would want to dress up for.

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

The fabric is wonderful. It's a bit heavier, thereby falling really nicely and being incredibly flattering. It's surprisingly comfortable to wear and it fits me like a glove. Usually, dresses with side cut-outs are very tricky for me but this one fits without any tweaks.

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

The neck bow adds a beautiful feminine detail but my favourite part of the dress...

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

... are of course the pockets. How many times do us girls find ourselves at a nice event wishing we had pockets to hide kleenex, mints, or any other essential items? Well, this dress has pockets and I could not be happier about it!

Shop Accessories

Gal Meets Glam also produces their own little scarves with each collection. I love adding scarves as an arm, neck, or purse accessory to all kinds of outfits.

Check out her collection online or at Nordstrom. Each month, she will release new dresses and they are limited edition. The April collection is selling out really fast! Which dress would you get?

How To Style A Striped Purse

Happy casual Friday everyone! I'm not usually the kind of person who follows trends blindly. I have my own style which I stay true to and most people would describe it as simple and classic (proof). However, this season is different and a can't resist anything with stripes! Stripes are everywhere at the moment and I love to style a striped purse with some basic (what else?) pieces to make it pop.

I found this purse at Aldo for only $45! They have a ton of other striped purses right now which I  like. Unfortunately, my closet space wouldn't allow me to have all of them.

I combined my new find with a basic woven cami, matching shoes, some skinny jeans from H&M, and the most comfortable long cardigan because it's still not that warm here.

3 Arts Café, Restoration Hardware

We found the perfect café and winter brunch spot in Chicago!

The food is outstanding, the atmosphere very chic, and you are seated amongst live trees and plants dotted throughout the courtyard. Did I mention the fountain and chandelier?

Kyle and I decided to have a pre-Valentine’s Day brunch at a place which I stumbled across on Instagram. (Thank you @insta_chicago) It’s a café in the courtyard of the Chicago Gold Coast Restoration Hardware store. Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago, the café seems to be one of those hidden gems – only that it’s not very hidden.

They don’t take reservations so we decided to arrive close to opening given that it was Sunday morning. We arrived only 15 minutes past opening time and the wait was already 1.5 hours. Most people would turn around at the mention of at least 1.5 hours until eating, especially if you're already hungry, but we thought it would be a good opportunity to stroll around the store.

5 levels filled with different styles of furniture and home décor. I was melting away.

(I'm wearing my favorite over the knee boots and purse from this post. The boots are sold out but I linked similar ones below. My polka dots flare dress is from Forever New. They don't have any stores in the U.S. but ship from Australia.)

Shop my look:

Our wait paid off as we were seated right by the fountain in the centre of the courtyard.

Of course,  we had to start off our pre-Valentine’s Day celebration with two glasses of sparkling…

Closely followed by the all-star Delice de Bourgogne cheese plate with oven-fresh bread.

I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

Needless to say that I polished off all the roasted pecans before breakfast.

We couldn’t leave without trying their amazing fries with aioli – very much worth overeating for.

Having eaten way too much as always, we left without dessert but very happy to have found another great brunch spot in Chicago to take family and friends to whenever they are in town.

If you decide to grab a bite at 3 Arts Café, make sure you arrive early or on a weekday to avoid long wait times. For those who struggle to get out of bed early enough, there are plenty of things to do and see in the Restoration Hardware store while you’re waiting for your table. It’s well worth the wait.

A Walk in the Snow, Chicago

By now, you may have caught on to the idea that Kyle and I love winter, a snowy winter that is. Unlike some people who contemplate leaving Chicago because of its weather, we were looking forward to moving here, hoping for many snowy winter months. The last two winters were rather mild and quite disappointing on the snow-front. Things are looking up though right now! We were hit by a snowstorm at the end of last week which was cause for some to take a snow-day, aka work from home. I didn’t truly believe it would happen until I woke up to 30cm of fresh powder!

Excited as a puppy about how the city was turned into a snowy fairy tale, I couldn’t wait to put on my boots and go for a walk. I decided to ignore the weather app warnings and wear my pretty A-line coat from Ever New (check out some of the most beautiful A-line coats here) instead of my clunky but properly warm Fjiallraven I’m wearing in this post. Bundled up in my favorite blanket scarf this season from Zara and the surprisingly warm over-knees (currently on sale!), we were off to the lake…

Shop my look:

Where we found what I had been looking for: tons of untouched snow and amazing views of the snowy Chicago skyline!

A walk along the snow covered lakeshore in Aldo over the knee boots, black a-line jacket, and cute Aldo purse with the Chicago skyline in the background.

The entire lakeshore was frozen and snow covered, providing spectacular sights which Kyle managed to capture.

While I was trying to capture him taking pictures of everything.

We played around in the snow for a while, making snow angels and having snowball fights, until the cold got the best of us.

Exhausted and by now freezing cold, we took a last look back at the view and headed to a café to warm up with a well-deserved cup of hot chocolate.

How did you spend your weekend?

What about these ones?

4 Must Haves and Dos to Get Through Winter

I love winter! Especially the time before Christmas when everything is beautifully decorated, there’s Christmas music playing everywhere, I can stroll through our local Christkindlmarkt, and share some mulled wine with friends. Not to mention the impatient wait for the first snowfall!!

Things look slightly different in January and February when it’s cold out, dreary, and the houses look barren and empty once those Christmas decorations have been packed away. It’s sort of a wake-up call and one realizes how gray winter can look without the pink holiday glasses on.

Here are a few winter activities I love doing, even after the holiday romance is gone.

  • Splurge on fragrances to turn your home into a warm winter wonderland. I'm currently obsessed with Antica Farmacista and DW Candles since they were introduced to me by a friend. Both home fragrances brands are out of this world. I turned our living room into a warm citrusy vanilla bliss escape with a little help from Vanilla, Bourbon, and Mandarin.

  • Enjoy some home-made epic mulled cider in the snow. (Check out The Londoner for the amazingly easy recipe.) Because there is nothing better than keeping warm with your favourite hot beverage, whilst the outside twinkles like a winter wonderland. Of course, the whole winter wonderland story doesn't always come true, so cozying up in front of the fire is a viable alternative!

  • Invite your friends over for a fabulous winter dinner. I love cooking and turning my dining table and dishes into little pieces of art!

  • Go ice skating in the snow. If you were too late to the party and the ice rink is closed (as was our case), there is nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of sparkling while overlooking the rink. I especially love the Chicago Peninsula sky rink! It's well-hidden on the 4th floor of the hotel, tucked away from big crowds, beautifully decorated, and has a heated lounge area for really cold Chicago winter days.

Cheers to kicking off 2018!
