Favourite Christmas Activities in Chicago with Chicwish

Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. Living in a city like Chicago, there are so many great ways to experience the holidays if you need a little help getting into the Christmas spirit, or if you just want to take it all in!

I feel like no trip downtown into the Loop is complete without a quick visit to the Bean. It’s my favourite Chicago landmark, and no matter the weather or time of day is always so photogenic.

One of my newest favourite pastimes (you might already know if you follow me on Instagram) is lobby hunting! There are so many great hotels and office towers in Chicago and it seems that each year they try to out-do each other in Christmas decorations!

My favourite office building decoration was by far the tree at 77 W Wacker Drive and you easily see why! (Hint: their ornaments are my favourite colour!)

As far as hotel lobbies go, the lobby at the Conrad Chicago Hotel surpassed all my expectations. Located on the 20th floor, it is secluded from the shopping fever on Michigan Avenue and made me feel more relaxed the moment I stepped off the elevator. The lobby is flooded with natural light. Once you make your way to the floor to ceiling windows to catch a glimpse of the fantastic city view, you can't help but admire the colourfully decorated staircase and Christmas tree.

Finally, a Christmas tour of the Loop would not be complete without stops at the the Macy’s Christmas windows and the Christkindlmarket. Both attractions are so popular that I suggest going as early in the morning as possible to avoid the crowds if you're visiting on a weekend, or try to stop by on a week day.

Every year, I treat myself to a gluhwein, which tastes just like at home in Switzerland, but this time I couldn’t help myself and caved for some hot chocolate.

One thing to keep in mind when exploring the city in December - it can be really cold and windy. Big thanks to Chicwish for keeping me warm as I explored Chicago’s Christmas wonders this year. Their cozy sweaters are the perfect combination of fashionable, cute, and warm! I have been wearing them non-stop since they arrived in the mail. I also love the elegance of the Cape Coat which will easily make any winter outfit look more put together. If you're curious to see how the sweaters and the coat fit, you can check out my try-on Instagram stories which include sizing information.

These are just a few of my favourite holiday traditions in Chicago, and we didn’t even get a chance to ice skate over to Millenium Park, admire the Zoo Lights, or take a ride on the holiday train! What is your favourite way to celebrate the holidays in Chicago?

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

In two short months, Kyle and I have officially been blogging for a year and I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. We have met some incredible people along the way and have been to amazing places. But most importantly, we were able to share this journey with you! We wouldn't be here without you and we hope to be able to inspire you to take that next trip you were planning for so long, explore new cultures, and take fashion around the globe! Your support means the world to us which is why I want to share some of my favorite bloggers with you and the reason why we met: Style Collective.

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

What is Style Collective?

Style Collective is a community of bloggers and #bossbabes, founded by Annie Spano. Annie’s goal was to create a community for go-getters in the blogging industry who support one another, teach each other the ins and outs of the industry, and eventually even become friends.  I joined Style Collective a few months ago looking for exactly that: a community of #bossbabes who I could connect with and who all have the blogging industry in common. Little did I know that I would find so much more than that: Style Collective helped me take our blog to the next level and I have been able to connect with some amazing women.

How Style Collective Helped Me Take Our Blog to the Next Level

After signing up for their membership program, I dove into their online resources and learned an incredible amount about the blogging industry. From how to find and communicate my mission, pitch to brands, calculate the value of blog and Instagram posts (yes, I was surprised to hear how much Instagram posts can be worth), and how to successfully work with brands (check out our collaborations with JORD and SomSleep), you can learn everything with their e-books.

How To Take Your Blog To The Next Level With Style Collective

One of my favorite tools available online, is their brand directory which includes contact information of companies who are looking to work with bloggers. Having this information compiled in one place helps facilitate collaborations and partnerships, and build valuable business relations.

Meeting Annie Spano - The Founder of Style Collective

But Style Collective is more than just an online resource. Annie goes out of her way to connect with #scsisters and build a sense of community. She makes time to respond to individual inquiries, to meet with Style Collective members (yes, I met her in person and she is even sweeter than she is on social media), and has helped me host my first Style Collective get-together.

The Style Collective Community

Annie is not just an inspiration from a business persective, she is also the reason why I have met some incredible bloggers all across the country. Not only are they successful bloggers, they also all have full-time jobs, family, and support people who are just starting out. How they manage to fit their busy lives into 24-hour days is beyond me.

Let me introduce you to 7 of my favorite #SCmembers who support me every day. I hope they inspire you just as much as they inspire me.

  • Renata from Urban Girl Goes Beach Mom is a fashion, beauty, and mom blogger and has two adorable kids. She inspires other moms (and non-moms like me) to be in style. I love her casual chic style and her 5 minute makeup looks she creates every Monday morning on Instagram live. If you're only remotely as busy as she is, check out her quick and easy makeup tutorials! You can read her blog here and follow her on Instagram here.

I met Lisa in person and she is incredibly sweet, smart, and so knowledgeable about any good sale must-haves. You can't miss her blog and have to check out her Instagram here.

  • Kirsten from Diary of a Dirty Blonde is living the jet-setter life every girl dreams of. Kirsten won me in a heartbeat with her funny and cute Instagram stories which I'm sure you would enjoy as well. Read her latest travel adventures here and follow her on Instagram here.

  • Kaitlin from Exquisitely Average is a lifestyle blogger, works full time as a pediatric occupational therapist, and makes me laugh with her Instagram stories every single day. I love her boho-chic style and can't get enough of her stories about her boy, her puppy, or her life in general. She is an amazingly sweet person and I enjoy spending time with her - also offline. Do you have a tea time coming up and need something to read? Her blog is perfect and for a short break, I can highly recommend her Instagram.

  • Katie from Lifestyle by Katie is a Chicago-based lifestyle blogger when she's not busy with her full-time job. She won me over instantly with her love for fashion and her adorable personality. Only Katie knows how to turn a canceled trip into a breathtaking domestic getaway and smile her way through the week. You can visit her blog here and should follow her fall adventures on Instagram here.

  • Jenny from Her Best Always is the go-getter I dream of being. She's an attorney (and we all know how much attorneys work), a dog mom, and an inspiring fashion blogger who blogs about every day casual and work wear. She inspires me with her warm personality and her feminine corporate fashion to be my best every day. The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

I truly believe that everyone needs a great watch that they can use everywhere - from work, to a night out on the town, or on their next trip. I'm not just talking about any regular watch that displays time - that is what phones are for these days. What I'm talking about is the one accessory that makes you feel more put together, the accessory that starts a conversation, is as unique as you and will take you places!

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

Let me introduce you to this wooden watch which has won me over with its unique yet classic design. Coming from Switzerland, I have a special relation with watches and am very picky with watch designs (let's be honest, I'm picky about pretty much everything). I like large watches that make a statement but I also like classic designs. This Jord wood watch checks both boxes and with a bit of luck, you can win $100 towards your own watch at the end of this post!

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

I must admit, I had never heard of the concept of a wooden watch but I love it! The wood is extremely comfortable to wear and is not only perfect for people who love a unique accessory but also for people with sensitive skin. Unlike leather watches which can cause skin irritations (yes that's a thing and it runs in my family), plastic watches which wear out too fast, or metal watches which really pinch your hair, this wooden watch is amazingly comfortable to wear.

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

By far my favourite feature of the Dover watch is that it's a mechanical watch. Mechanical watches, or self-winding watches, use a spring instead of a battery to show the passing of time. Meaning, you don't have to change the battery - ever! Instead, you wind it up to run. It's such a cool aspect of the watch and I'm fascinated watching the springs work.

The Classic Wooden Watch That Takes You Places

Mechanical watches are the oldest form of watches and originated in Europe in the 17th century. You really can't get more classic than wearing this mechanical wooden watch which will transport you right back in time like this one did for me when walking through the streets of Silverton, Colorado.

If you're not as much into watching the springs of the watch work, Jord has a wide variety of self-winding wooden watches with different and unique designs as well as watches that are battery operated. They range from modern men’s watches to dainty women’s watches, can all be engraved, and come in this gorgeous wooden box.

I would like to think that I fit right in while walking through town, passing by a horse and carriage, and exploring old mines – all while wearing my Jord watch.

Blogging On The Go

Kyle and I are the kind of people who like to be busy all the time and are constantly on the go. We rarely take time off and do absolutely nothing. Sure, there is the odd Saturday in winter when we binge watch Orange is the New Black (or any other show we’re obsessed with) in our PJs all day. There was also this one weekend we spent on the beach in Cancun. Other than that, we’re often on the road, exploring a new country, city, or coffee shop.

Blogging On The Go

The days we’re at home in Chicago, we like to explore the city and everything it has to offer. Given my love for coffee and working in public spaces, I’m always on the look-out for a new cute coffee shop and recently found a place I can’t wait to share with you. In the middle of Lakeview, right on Broadway, there is Maison Marcel – possibly the prettiest French shabby chic coffee shop I have ever seen outside of France.

Blogging On The Go

Filled with unique furniture, a fireplace, and rustic French décor, it won over my heart the moment I walked in.

The owner, originally from Marseille, France, serves delicious lattes, sweets, and buttery soft croissants. My personal favorite is the almond chocolate croissant. It’s the irresistible combination of European almond paste with chocolate, all wrapped in a flaky crust.

Because we’re always on the go and often blog while we’re on the road, we spend a lot of time on our phones and laptop. I personally carry my laptop with me almost everywhere.

Shop My Look

My shoes are from Guess and a few years old. I linked similar ones below.

The super soft knit vest with fringe is from my favorite Spanish designer store Teria Yabar.

My bracelets are from InStyleCo.

This makes it all the more important to protect our blogging equipment from scratches, spills, or drops. I was really excited when I received my custom iphone case and laptop skin from CaseApp.

They are not only functional but fit right in with my desire for everything to look pretty and preferably be pastel coloured. The phone case and the laptop skin fit in perfectly with my on the go lifestyle (and style!).

I custom designed my phone case – using one of the many designs and adding words to live by.

You can design your own phone case or laptop skin on the CaseApp website and they will ship it directly to you! If you’d like to design your own, you can get 20% off using the discount code BEINGBETTINA20. Happy shopping (don’t wait too long, the discount code lasts until the end of August)!

What do you think of these cases? Aren't they so cute? Let me know in the comments below!

My Favourite Swimsuits For An Extended Summer

I can't believe we're already halfway through summer (at least according to Chicago weather we are). Regardless of how soon it will cool down again in Chicago, I truly believe in extending summer by booking weekend get-aways to warmer places such as a weekend in Cancun or a weekend on the Cayman Islands. Planning a short trip to the beach not only allows you to relax after a busy week at work - but also is the perfect excuse to shop for cute swimsuits which are currently all on sale!

My Favourite Swimsuits For An Extended Summer

I could come up with a pun like "shopping is a splash when your favorite items are on sale" but I will spare you my very punny humour. 😀

My Favourite Swimsuits For An Extended Summer

I'm usually a bikini type of person but really love all the cute swimsuits this season. There are so many great options with ruffle and floral details - I couldn't resist and had to get one myself.

In addition to the ruffles which look like flowers, the low plunge and the high leg make this type of swimsuit very flattering for almost every body type. Did I mention it has a cute back too?

Because I always struggle to find flattering and cute swimsuits and bikinis, I put together my favorite swimwear picks this summer for you which are all on sale!

White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge

Going to a white party has been on my bucket list for years. I have to admit that I got hooked on the idea of going to a party where everyone is dressed in white through one of my favourite TV shows. It is such an elegant concept for a summer event that you just can't resist the idea. When I received an invite to go to the White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge, I canceled all my other plans for Sunday, which consisted of my usual weekend to do list, aka laundry, and dragged Kyle shopping for an all-white outfit. After all, going to this party is a bucket list item and it was part of the fun to follow the theme closely.

White Party at the Devereaux Rooftop Lounge

We got to the Devereaux Rooftop at noon and were blown away by the sleek and modern design of the rooftop. The turquoise pool in the middle is surrounded by little white tables and white chairs - perfect for spending a sunny afternoon with friends, drinks, and some bites.

The Devereaux is located in the gold coast neighbourhood, a great location for some astonishing city and lake views. We found a cozy table and couldn't resist the idea of a cool and sweet Frosé, a cool summer drink made with - who would have guessed it - frozen rosé.

The White Party featured small bites by chef Lee Wolen which of course we couldn't pass up. Shortly after we started sipping on our drinks, waiters flew around with trays of heavenly goodness.

We were served some incredibly delicious fried chicken and pickle bites with sriracha aioli and ranch, tuna poke on a nori chip with avocado and sesame, and my personal favorite - roasted strawberry and burrata with basil on a brioche.

Light, fresh, and too good to resist! Needless to say, I grabbed a bite every time these trays came around.

Us girls couldn't resist a few snaps to show off our pretty white party outfits.

The Gal Meets Glam Collection Launch

Happy (not so casual) Friday! This is a very special blog post to me. Exactly one week ago, Gal Meets Glam launched their dress collection. I have been following Julia Engel (Gal Meets Glam) for a while now and I love everything she does. Her energy is inspiring, her style impeccable, and her business drive is mind-blowing. She has worked so hard to get from being a blogger to a clothing designer and now sells her line at Nordstrom. I'm a fan of her dresses, all of her work, but most of all, I'm a fan of her being an empowering example to women all over the world by showing what one can achieve with hard work.

As some of you know, I was in line at Nordstrom Michigan Avenue right when the store opened a week ago. The first 30 customers to buy one of her dresses would get a ticket to meet her on May 17 in Chicago (which also happens to be my birthday). Of course, I couldn't pass up the chance to be one of the first to see her collection in store and to get a chance to meet her.

It turns out, there were a few Gal Meets Glam fans at Nordstrom that morning. As soon as the doors opened, we all ran up to the third floor to be the first ones to see the collection. It was incredible! All the dresses were even prettier than they look online!

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

I immediately fell in love with the dress Evelyn and so it came home with me.

It's a beautiful spring occasion dress and would work perfectly for attending weddings, spring or summer evening parties, or any other events you would want to dress up for.

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

The fabric is wonderful. It's a bit heavier, thereby falling really nicely and being incredibly flattering. It's surprisingly comfortable to wear and it fits me like a glove. Usually, dresses with side cut-outs are very tricky for me but this one fits without any tweaks.

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

The neck bow adds a beautiful feminine detail but my favourite part of the dress...

Bettina in Gal Meets Glam Evelyn dress

... are of course the pockets. How many times do us girls find ourselves at a nice event wishing we had pockets to hide kleenex, mints, or any other essential items? Well, this dress has pockets and I could not be happier about it!

Shop Accessories

Gal Meets Glam also produces their own little scarves with each collection. I love adding scarves as an arm, neck, or purse accessory to all kinds of outfits.

Check out her collection online or at Nordstrom. Each month, she will release new dresses and they are limited edition. The April collection is selling out really fast! Which dress would you get?

How To Style A Striped Purse

Happy casual Friday everyone! I'm not usually the kind of person who follows trends blindly. I have my own style which I stay true to and most people would describe it as simple and classic (proof). However, this season is different and a can't resist anything with stripes! Stripes are everywhere at the moment and I love to style a striped purse with some basic (what else?) pieces to make it pop.

I found this purse at Aldo for only $45! They have a ton of other striped purses right now which I  like. Unfortunately, my closet space wouldn't allow me to have all of them.

I combined my new find with a basic woven cami, matching shoes, some skinny jeans from H&M, and the most comfortable long cardigan because it's still not that warm here.

10 Days with Hand Luggage Only

There are many benefits to travelling with hand luggage only. Ask Kyle and he won’t stop talking for at least 20 minutes. 🙂 There’s no need to carry a heavy bag, less risk of your items being damaged or stolen, no risk of the airline losing your bag, or someone else walking away with your bag from baggage claim. The best of all benefits is that you are flexible in case of flight delays or cancellations. It has happened to Kyle before that his flight got cancelled and he was able to get on the next flight right away which wouldn’t have been possible if they had to locate his checked luggage first. For a girly girl like me though, hand luggage only is a real struggle. My approach to packing is taking all of my favourite seasonal items with me so that I have a wide selection of outfits at my destination. This allows me not to think about what I will be wearing but just wear what I feel like. - Not this time!

Navy, light blue, and black flats and purses assembly

We’re embarking on a 10 day trip to New England and Europe and decided to only bring hand luggage because we have some very tight unprotected flight connections, where checking luggage isn't possible. I thought I would share with you the difficult task of packing as many different outfits in a tiny carry-on suitcase as possible.

The key to packing light and small is bringing some items you can wear in a variety of different combinations. I'm sticking to a navy, light blue, and white colour theme with the odd black items which will make it easy to combine everything with each other. I’m packing 3 pairs of jeans, white, black, and navy, (all from H&M) because it’s likely going to be a bit cold still and jeans are super easy to combine.

White, navy, and black jeans assembly to be packed

A space-saving alternative to jeans are skirts and tights. Both can easily be folded very small and hardly take up any space. And an added bonus is they are cute!

Navy, light blue, and black flats and purses assembly for packing

With tops, I still like to go crazy as they don’t take a lot of space and I need some backups in case of spillage. (For those who don’t know me, my best accidents involve white shirts and balsamic vinegar!) The navy and white striped shirt is from Zara.

Assembly of black, white, striped, and light blue tops for packing

Shop Basic Outfits

Jackets and coats are probably the most difficult things to pack given that they are heavy and take up a lot of space. However, for a trip to Europe in March, they are absolutely necessary. I usually wear my heaviest coat on the plane and pack my lighter ones. This time, I’m bringing 3 completely different jackets for each type of weather: cold and wet, cool and sunny, warm and sunny. I've had my navy jackets for years but the white one is one of my favourite items from Zara this season (check it out here).

Three jackets for March travel in Europe

Last but definitely not least, shoes, purses, and accessories! Given that we will be doing a lot of walking, I’m bringing flats only. (I know, shocking since I usually wear heels 24/7!) Flats almost don’t take up any space, are easy to stack in the suitcase, and help when you walk all day long on cobbled streets which is certainly how we travel. Of course, I need to bring matching purses to complete the outfit, +1 travel purse for on the plane to hold all my plane essentials (a discussion for another day).

Shop Shoes and Purses

The light blue flats are on sale for $25 right now, shop here! I found the Michael Kors flats on sale at Macy's and they have the black ones on sale here.

Clothes neatly packed in an open carry-on suitcase

Surprisingly, it all fits! And in case I find an odd item abroad, I will ask Kyle nicely to add it to his hand luggage. (Full disclosure: My light blue clutch found its way into Kyle's luggage as we were worried it would get too squished in mine.)

Cashmere Poncho and Michael Kors Heels

Happy casual Friday!

Even though it's officially Spring now, the Chicago weather doesn't believe in calendar dates and it remains chilly and windy. On the rare occasions when it's above freezing, I immediately get into spring mode (and usually end up freezing because I misjudged the temperatures).

I'm a big fan of all things blue, as you may already have noticed, and love to combine navy with light blue and white.

Bettina sitting on stairs with cashmere poncho, michael kors pumps, and navy blue purse

I'm super excited about this cashmere poncho which I found on sale at Nordstrom Rack. It's sooo soft and was under $100! Usually, cashmere is quite pricey but if you wait and search long enough, you might find a bargain and it's totally worth it. It's the softest poncho I own (and I have a few) and doubles as a scarf!

Bettina leaning against hand rail with cashmere poncho, michael kors pumps, and navy blue purse

Shop Cashmere Ponchos

I've had this purse for a couple of years and still love it. It's super spacious and because it's navy, it goes with almost everything in my closet. Since having a scarf around the purse seems to be having a come-back (was it ever really out of style?), I decided to add one to this as well to bring some colour into the mix (with colour I mean more shades of blue). The great thing about having a scarf on your purse is that if it gets cold and you forgot to bring one, you can just steal your purse's scarf.

Shop Purses and Scarves

Last but most certainly not least, I scored these Michael Kors shoes on sale at Macy's a week or two ago! They are super comfortable and I love the detail at the back. I love the Michael Kors brand and think they're doing everything right. Their items are simple, classic, with a hint of modern - just my style! I found them online on sale still in nude and light pink. The navy ones linked below are under $100!

All set to go out tonight! (Or back inside because it's too cold out!) What are your best finds this early Spring?
